“The tournament has been a longtime supporter of the Miami, Broward, Palm Beach and Treasure Coast chapters of The First Tee,” said Butch Buchholz, Cadillac Championship Tournament Chairman. “So many lessons are learned through the game of golf. We welcome patrons from all of South Florida and we are delighted to give back and further promote these lessons of integrity, hard work, honesty and more, which are taught by the programs and mission of The First Tee in Broward County.”
The First Tee of Broward was founded in 2003 as one of the early chapters in Florida. Over the years, the chapter has reached thousands of participants and partnered with various youth development organizations such as Boys and Girls Clubs and the YMCA, and area golf courses to offer programming.
Funded by the Cadillac Championship, The First Tee National School Program (NSP) is being implemented in over 40 elementary schools. Over 700 schools in the state of Florida offer NSP to their students. The chapter’s territory includes all of Broward County which encompasses over 150,000 elementary age school students. Expansion of NSP is a top priority in the immediate future.
“We are very grateful for the Cadillac Championship’s expanded support for our chapter,” said Carl Mistretta, Executive Director of The First Tee of Broward. “This partnership will allow us to expand our programs all throughout the county and reach many more deserving young people.”
The First Tee of Broward is one of over 180 chapters throughout the world and one of 15 chapters in the state of Florida. Programs are taught by PGA and LPGA certified instructors trained by The First Tee. The chapter offers the opportunity for all students to learn the Nine Core Values and Nine Healthy Habits of The First Tee program.
Typically, we schedule a series of 9 once weekly sessions with a school or youth development organization. Sessions are 1.5 to 2 hours each time. We also offer Saturday and weekday evening classes. Each session includes a Nine Core Value and Nine Healthy Habit, encompassed into golf instruction. The Nine Core Values are Honesty, Integrity, Sportsmanship, Respect, Confidence, Responsibility, Perseverance, Courtesy and Judgment.
The First Tee Nine Healthy Habits were created through collaboration among The First Tee, ANNIKA Foundation and Florida Hospital for Children to promote healthy, active lifestyles for young people. The healthy habits are a list of nine health and wellness topics presented as a part The First Tee, formatted for easy understanding and learning by elementary-age students and chapter participants.
